Make Better Movies!

Lets fix it in Pre-production.
The Synapse to Screen 1.0 Conference is a two-day event to be held on December 3rd and 4th, 2009, in association with the 10th Annual Santa Fe Film Festival (SFFF). Covering all things Pre-production in the making of movies, with panels, demonstrations, and lectures, including techniques and modern tools used in brainstorming & mind-mapping, outlining, plot & character development, screenwriting, story-boarding, budgeting, production reports, and scheduling a movie. This will be a live event with audience interaction and podcasts made availble after the event. The first day, Dec. 3rd, will deal with the writer oriented aspects of pre-production, and the second day, Dec. 4th, will address the aspects more related to taking the script from page to screen. The focus of S2S1.0 is the tools and their use, not the concepts of story, screenwriting, etc., per se. I would like to emphasize that the first day's sessions will be beneficial to all writers, not just screenwriters |

I use Storyboard Artist for sorting my frames. I use Photoshop for adding gray tones or color, but the actual drawing of the frames is still on good old paper. I have a lightweight, reliable scanner that goes with me and my laptop, and it all works out. I love the new drawing tablets. I still like getting the sides of my hand dirty!

HOLLY V. ADAMS ~ Filmmaker, grew up in Texas but never became the debutante her parents were raising her to be. She escaped into the ballet studio as a child where she could live in her imaginary world. At 13, she won a scholarship to the San Francisco Ballet and lived at a nun’s convent in the middle of Haight Ashbury while dancing with the company. Big city life opened its arms to Holly and she inevitably found herself investigating other sides of the huge world out there aside from the sheltered life of a ballet dancer.
After dancing in Austin, she got a job dancing with the Milwaukee Ballet. But Holly was attracted to rock and roll and other forms of music besides classical and formed her own all girl band, “The Curves”. Holly performed in the biggest proscenium theater as a ballerina while appearing in a rock band in the local dive bars.
When the director and all of the dancers of the Milwaukee Ballet got fired, Holly got her first jazz dance gig in Curacao and Montreal. This allowed her to save up $2,000 so she could pursue her life long dream of moving to New York City.
While in NYC, Holly worked continuously as a dancer while studying acting and voice. She won the lead in her first acting audition for a film entitled “Betaville”, a short film which was a spoof of Jean Luc Godard’s “Alphaville”. The film garnered cult status in the underground NY film scene. While in New York, Holly Adams made about 12 films and became a cult underground film star.
Bitten by the bug and getting most of her filmmaking education by being on sets, Holly wrote, starred in and produced her first film, “Nymphomania”. The movie captured lots of attention and was included in the British Film Institute’s “History of the Avant Garde” compilation tape of the Cinema of Transgression.
Holly, tired of the gypsy life of a NYC dancer/actress, decided it was time to have a family and moved to Albuquerque, NM. There, at UNM she got her theater degree, got married and had her daughter, Sage in 2000.
After taking a long break from the performing arts, Holly has again gotten the itch. But this time, she is involved both in front of and behind the camera. She currently teaches a Meisner Based Acting class and directs her own films. “When acting, you are limited by character but when you direct, you are all the characters, the scenery, the camera shots, etc”. The art of creating a world which is the essence of filmmaking is one of the most exciting aspects of the work for Holly.
In the last 2 years, Holly has written, produced and directed two short films, “Hot Dog “ and “Here Boy” and has since completed her first feature film screenplay, “No Place”. Holly is currently teaching an acting class and choreographing local theater shows but her big dream is to produce and direct her groundbreaking feature film, “No Place”.
