PRESENTATION 7:30 to 9:00: SFMUG Holiday Yankee Swap, party and libations!
SFMUG will host the second annual "Yankee Swap" at the December 1 general meeting. Because the concept is a little difficult to understand if you've never participated in one before, here is SFMUG's variation on this popular game:
1. Bring one or more wrapped gifts to exchange with others in the group. The gift can either be an item of value, a white elephant gift, or a gag gift. There is no dollar limit (upper or lower) on gifts. Try to select gift(s) with some connection to the Macintosh specifically or computers in general.
2. For each gift you bring to exchange, you will receive a numbered ticket.
3. Numbered tickets will then be drawn randomly. The first person whose number is drawn selects a wrapped gift from the table and opens it in front of everyone else.
4. Here's where it gets difficult to understand, so pay attention. The next person whose number is drawn can select either a gift that someone else has already unwrapped or a wrapped gift from the table. If they select someone else's unwrapped gift, the person left empty- handed must select either a different gift that someone else has already unwrapped or a wrapped gift from the table. An unwrapped gift can only be swapped once during a turn. The turn ends when somebody finally chooses a wrapped gift from the table.
5. Continue drawing numbers. The last person can still select either a gift that someone else has already unwrapped or the last wrapped gift from the table. Obviously, with the rule that unwrapped gifts can only be swapped once during a turn, the last person pretty much gets their pick of the best gift (unless it ends up being the last wrapped gift and they don't choose it).
SFMUG board members have volunteered to bring some extra gifts and donate the tickets back to the group for sale to those members who
either forget or choose to not bring a gift of their own. For a measly $5 per ticket, you are guaranteed a gift of some sort (in fact, it's known that there will be a couple of iTunes gift certificates worth $20 and $30 apiece). The number of tickets available for sale will be determined by how many donated gifts are supplied. Support SFMUG by bringing an extra gift and donating the ticket to be sold by SFMUG to another person.
***Editor's Note: Do you design websites? Create slideshows, music or movies,? Do you edit photos, write books, or design homes? Are you
plotting the stars, documenting chemtrails, working out the cure for cancer or hunger? Are you putting the final touches on your free
energy invention? No matter what you use your Mac for, sharing how you do it will inspire others to new levels of whatever they us their
Mac for.
Let one of the SFMUG Board members know and we'll help you tell your story to the group.
!!!See Holiday Yankee Swap above!!!
Ed. Of all the duties connected with the SFMUG, the raffle chairman is always under a lot of pressure to provide interesting gifts to be raffled. Steve Zappe works hard throughout each month to find worthwhile material for the raffle and we all appreciate his contribution.
Your purchase of raffle tickets allows this organization to raise necessary funds in support of our outreach programs.

SNL parodies Jobs
by ron carlson, Insanely Great Mac
November 20th 2005
What holds 50,000 songs, came out just minutes ago and is already
obsolete? Well, the new iPod micro, of course!
What in the name of Steve could top that? What's the new gold standard?
For a few moments, it was the iPod Pequeno (1-million songs). This model was, of course, supplanted by another new modelthe iPod Invisa
that's invisible, and holds 8-million songs and "every picture ever taken."
Or, at least, that was the satire served last night on Saturday Night Live, which lampooned Apple's dear leader, Steve Jobs. See a clip of this "media event" here.

BusinessWeek: Apple iPod a gigantic hit facing staggering demand, shortages predicted
"With the holiday shopping season at hand, two truths are swiftly emerging about Apple's iPod digital-music player. First, the product is going to be a gigantic hit. Second, there are going to be shortages," Peter Burrows reports for BusinessWeek. "The only question is how big the shortfall will be. Some retailers contacted
by BusinessWeek Online say they're getting far fewer iPods than they requested -- in two cases, fewer than half of their weekly orders. Also, retailing giant Circuit City expects demand to outstrip supply through the end of the year, though a spokesman wouldn't say to what degree."

iTunes US bigger than Tower Records
By Dan Nystedt for Macworld
iTunes has become the seventh largest music retailer in the US, competing with high street music stores.
New research from the NPD Group shows iTunes climbing from last year’s fourteenth place to become as powerful as most music
stores on the high street, and predicted the service would edge out more stores by the end of the year.
The iTunes Music Store beat out Tower Records, Sam Goody and Borders in NPD's third quarter ranking to crack the top ten for
the first time ever, the research claimed. iTunes’ fast ascension to seventh place reflects the speed at which users are turning to music online.
"With the growing interest in digital music, forecasts of more iPod demand this holiday, plus the stocking-stuffer appeal of iTunes gift cards, we can expect Apple to increase its share even more by year's end," said Russ Crupnick, music and movies industry analyst for the NPD Group, in the report.
In September, Apple revealed it has sold more than 600 million songs and has over ten million iTunes account holders.
The company yesterday confirmed it has sold over 30 million iPods since the product launched in 2001.
NPD Group ranked the iTunes Music Store against traditional retailers by counting 12 songs per album to compare online sales with physical CDs and singles.
Wal-Mart retained its first place ranking as the top music seller, followed in order by Best Buy, Target and Amazon.com, all of which held onto their previous spots, according to NPD. For Your Entertainment leaped to fifth place from tenth, and Circuit City dropped one spot to sixth.

the last iMac, this one has a faster G5 processor, faster RAM, a souped-up graphics card and up to 500GB of internal hard disk storage. It has all of that plus a built-in iSight camera.” [Nov 10, 2005] http://www.time.com/time/business/article/0,8599,1127766,00.html

Future Tech - Displays Without Screens Show Promise
by Vern Seward, 11:00 AM EDT, September 17th, 2003
CRTs, LCDs, even plasma screens all have one thing in common; the image they show is on a piece of plate glass,
and about as fragile. You can't walk around the image and see it from other angles, you can't use your finger to
interact with the image directly, and you can't hope to find anything that will produce images of objects that seem to float in midair. Or can you?
