............………….. SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENTS
PRESENTATION: All about iPod
SFMUG will be giving away an iPod mini to the member that recruited the most new members over the last three months. I congratulate the winner and thank them for telling there friends about our MUG! As if that weren’t enough, Lynn will lead a tour of discovery into all things iPod. He will cover everything including, but not limited to; loading and playing music and Podcasts on an iPod, listening to Audible Books, dowsing for water with an iPod and using an iPod as a defibrillator.
***Editor's Note: Do you design websites? Create slideshows, music or movies,? Do you edit photos, write books, or design homes? Are you plotting the stars, working out the cure for cancer or hunger? Are you putting the final touches on your free energy invention? No matter what you use your Mac for, sharing how you do it will inspire others to new levels of whatever they us their Mac for.
Let one of the SFMUG Board members know and we'll help you tell your story to the group.
............………….......... RAFFLE
Even if you are the lucky SFMUG member to recruit the most new members and win that new iPod Mini for yourself, you should still buy raffle tickets at the September meeting. Why? Here are some of the things you could take home if you're holding a winning ticket:
- Linksys EtherFast Cable/DSL Router with 4-Port Switch ($50 value)
- Crucial Gizmo! Hi-Speed 256MB USB Flash Drive ($28 value)
- Robin Williams "Cool Mac Apps" by John Tollett with Robin Williams ($22 value)
- "The Little Mac Book - Tiger Edition" by Robin Williams ($15 value)
- iTunes Gift Certificate ($10 value)
- A cool black Apple cap (priceless!)
and anything else that might show up between now and the meeting. Raffle tickets start at $2 each, or three for $5. Support SFMUG and buy a bunch - we may even have prizes for the losers like last month!
Ed. Of all the duties connected with the SFMUG, the raffle chairman is always under a lot of pressure to provide interesting gifts to be raffled. Steve Zappe works hard throughout each month to find worthwhile material for the raffle and we all appreciate his contribution.
Your purchase of raffle tickets allows this organization to raise necessary funds in support of our outreach programs.

Motorola's iTunes Phone Gets Closer to Reality
Tuesday - August 23, 2005
The Motorola E790 iTunes cell phone that the company announced a year ago took another step toward reality on Saturday, when the Federal Communications Commission announced that the phone had been approved for sale in the United States. Analysts said the long lag between the initial announcement and the release, which Motorola has said will happen sometime this quarter, may have a lot to do with the disparate cultures of Apple and Motorola http://www.macnewsworld.com/story/ TSU6sA84mUSalq/Motorolas-iTunes-Phone-Gets-Closer-to-Reality.xhtml

Apple Leads Dell in Quality Survey
Wednesday - August 17, 2005
A University of Michigan study has found that U.S. PC customers think Dell products come with poor customer service. The study also found that Apple Computer was at the head of the PC pack in terms of consumer satisfaction -- the second year in a row the Cupertino, Calif., company has earned the distinction.

Apple Trademarks 'Made for iPod'
Tuesday, August 23rd, 2005 at 9:00 AM
Apple has applied for a U.S. trademark for the phrase "Made For iPod", MacWorld UK reported Tuesday.
The filing with the US Patents and Trademarks Office is dated August 10, and covers all all types of iPod peripherals.
The application also suggests further extensions for the product family, saying "a full line of electronic and mechanical accessories and computer software for portable and handheld digital electronic devices for recording, organizing, transmitting, manipulating, and reviewing text, data, audio, image, and video files."
The application also details a branding definition, giving indication that Apple could be planning to broaden the range of the iPod brand in the coming months.

Metasploit Releases v 2.2 with OSX AFP Exploit
Submitted by hard-mac on Wed, 2004/08/11 - 02:15.
Version 2.2 of the Metasploit Framework contains an exploit module called afp_loginext which will exploit the AFP bufferflow problem in an OSX 10.3.3 system. It is unknown at this time if this exploit will work on unpatched OSX 10.3.0-2 systems, it does not work on unpatched 10.2.8 systems.
This exploit gives the attacker a root shell on the target system. Compromising the system further is a trivial process.
